The post is located in the International Meetings & NGO Liaison Team of the Division for Palestinian Rights (DPR), Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) at Headquarters in New York. The incumbent reports to the Team Leader under the overall supervision of the Director of the Division.
The Division for Palestinian Rights (DPR) of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) in the United Nations Secretariat serves as the Secretariat of the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP) and provides the following core functions:
• Organises the meetings of the Committee and its Bureau at UN Headquarters;
• Monitors political and other relevant developments;
• Organises a programme of international meetings and conferences;
• Implements a publications programme;
• Develops and maintains the United Nations Information System on the Question of Palestine (UNISPAL);
• Cooperates with civil society organizations active on the issue;
• Organises the annual observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People;
• Conducts an annual training programme at UN Headquarters and several other capacity building activities.
With delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in general, and in particular as they affect the question of Palestine.
Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and provides inputs on issues to the Team Leader and the Director of the Division.
Provides technical and substantive back up in the implementation of mandates of the office, particularly in the planning, organization and substantive servicing of international meetings, conferences and activities, in particular those with a civil society component, at Headquarters and abroad.
Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments, as well as subject matter experts, on coordination related to the planning, organization and substantive servicing of international meetings, conferences and activities.
Maintains contacts with non-governmental organizations, including those which are accredited to the Committee and including CSOs in the occupied Palestinian territory, with a special emphasis on national, regional and international coordinating mechanisms on the question of Palestine.
Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and non-governmental organizations and drafts information materials geared towards NGOs, such as the weekly bulletin “NGO Action News”.
Selects, classifies and stores in computerised databases information relating to NGOs and experts on the question of Palestine.
Participates in provision of secretariat services to the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People during its conferences, meetings, and delegation visits.
Prepares statements for the Chairman, Rapporteur and other Committee officials, final reports of international meetings, conferences and activities and contributes to the drafting of the annual report of the Committee to the General Assembly.
Performs other related duties as required, including to act as back-up to the other Political Affairs Officers in the team.

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international law or related area is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required.
Experience in dealing with issues of peace and security while working for an international organisation is desirable.
Experience in the political area with a focus on the question of Palestine or Arab-Israeli conflict is desirable.
Experience in working with non-governmental and civil society organisations is desirable.
Experience in servicing meetings under the auspices of an intergovernmental body, at and away from Headquarters, is desirable.
Experience working with intergovernmental organisations is desirable.
Experience working with protocol matters is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
